16th April 1944: In a repeat of the1925 Final, Shamrock Rovers defeated their Ringsend rivals, Shelbourne by 3-2 at Dalymount Park to win the FAI Cup for the ninth time. Bobby Rogers (8), Eddie Gannon (o.g. 19) and Liam Crowe (40) scored for the Hoops and Willie Fallon (18) and Mick McCluskey (80) were on the mark for Shelbourne.

16th April 1982: Anthony Elding was born on this day in Boston (Lincolnshire), England. Journeyman Elding played for 12 clubs during his time in England, his best spells coming at Stockport County and Stevenage Borough. He also had a brief spell at Hungarian giants Ferencvaros where he scored eight goals in 15 appearances. In 2013, he signed for Sligo Rovers and became a cult hero at The Showgrounds. He won the Player of the Month award for March 2013 and scored the winning goal in the 2013 FAI Cup final against Drogheda United. He also had brief spells at Cork City, Ballinamallard United and Derry City before he ended his career back at Sligo Rovers in 2016 where is involved in coaching at underage level. He was a member of the England C team that won the Four Nations Tournament in 2005 when it was hosted by the FAI.

On This Day in Irish Football - 16th April 

16th April 1947: Eamonn Rogers was born on this day in Dublin. The former Republic of Ireland international played for his country between 1967 and 1972, and made 19 appearances, scoring five goals from midfield. He made his debut in the famous 2-1 European Championship victory against Czechoslovakia in Prague on 22nd November 1967. He played in all four Brazilian Independence Cup matches in 192 (against Iran, Ecuador, Chile and Portugal) scoring against Ecuador and Chile. He turned professional in 1965 at Blackburn Rovers and moved to Charlton Athletic in 1971. Unfortunately, injuries hampered his career and he was forced to retire early in 1974 whilst at Northampton Town.
