On This Day in the LOI – 25th April

25th April 1954: Drumcondra defeated St. Patrick’s Athletic by 1-0 in the FAI Cup Final which was played at Dalymount Park. The winning goal was an unfortunate own goal scored by Dessie Byrne was just eleven minutes remaining to be played. The Drumcondra manager, Billy Behan completed a unique treble as a player with Shamrock Rovers in the 1931 and 1936 FAI Cup Finals and the referee for the 1943 FAI Cup Final between Drumcondra and Cork United.

25th April 1965: Shamrock Rovers and Limerick drew 1-1 in the FAI Cup Final which was played at Dalymount Park. This was Limerick’s first appearance in a FAI Cup Final whereas this was the 21st (15 wins) such appearance for the Hoops. Rovers took the lead through Noel Dunne (63) with Eddie Mulvey (70) equalising for Limerick. Dunne was a nephew of the legendary Jimmy Dunne.

On This Day in Irish Football - 25th April

25th April 1967: Alan Kernaghan was born on this day in Otley, West Yorkshire. Kernaghan played for Middlesbrough, Charlton Athletic, Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, St. Johnstone, Brechin City, Clyde, Livingston, Falkirk and Dundee. He made 22 appearances for Ireland between 1992 and 1996, scoring one goal and qualified for Ireland through his grandmother who was born in Northern Ireland. He was capped at schoolboy level for Northern Ireland.

25th April 1990: The Republic of Ireland secured a 1-0 win over Soviet Union as they stepped up preparations for the FIFA 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy. Steve Staunton (59) scored the only goal of the game at Lansdowne Road. Gary Waddock returned to the team for his first cap under Jack Charlton some four and a half years after he played also against the Soviet Union in a World Cup qualifying match in Moscow.

25th April 2001: The Republic of Ireland defeated Andorra by 3-1 in a World Cup qualifying match played at Lansdowne Road. Kevin Kilbane (34), Mark Kinsella (36) and captain Gary Breen (76) scored the Irish goals. Andorra had taken the lead through Ildefons Lima Sola (31).
