29th April 1956: Kevin Moran was born on this day in Dublin. The former defender started his career at Bohemians before he was signed by Manchester United in 1975. He also played for Sporting Gijon and Blackburn Rovers during his playing career. Moran had an incredible international career having made 71 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, scoring six goals between 1980 and 1994. Moran made his debut in 1980 against Switzerland and he was a member of the EURO 1988, 1990 World Cup & 1994 World Cup squads.

29th April 1956: Shamrock Rovers won the FAI Cup for the 13th time when they defeated Cork Athletic by 3-2 in a dramatic FAI Cup Final match which was played at Dalymount Park. The attendance was 35,017. Cork Athletic led by 2-0 with just thirteen minutes remaining following goals from Jimmy Delaney (34) and Jimmy Murphy (43). However, Rovers fought back with goals from Tommy Hamilton (77), Liam Hennessy (pen. 80) Ronnie Nolan who scored the winner in the second minute of injury time. Cork’s defeat denied Jimmy Delaney a unique achievement of winning Cup medals in four different countries as he had previously won Cup medals with Celtic (1937), Manchester United (1948) and Derry City (1954).

29th April 1973: Cork Hibernians retained the FAI Cup when they defeated Shelbourne in the FAI Cup Final replay which was played in Flower Lodge. This was the only occasion on which a FAI Cup Final was played outside of Dublin. Dave Bacuzzi, who died last week, was the player-manager of Hibs in both of their FAI Cup successes. 29th April 1987: The Republic of Ireland secured a 0-0 draw against Belgium on this day at Lansdowne Road. It was a crucial point during the 1988 European Championships qualifying campaign for Jack Charlton's side.
