April 7, 1955 – Fran O’Brien was born in Dublin on this day. He won League (1974/75) and FAI Cup (1976) medals with Bohemians before joining Philadelphia Fury of the North American Soccer League along with teammates Eddie Byrne and Pat Byrne in March 1978. He played out his playing career in Canada and the United States. He won three caps for the Republic of Ireland between 1979 and 1980. His older brother, Ray (Shelbourne, Manchester United and Notts County) won five caps between 1976 and 1980 during his time with Notts County.

April 7, 1963 – Johnny Kingston scored a hat-trick for Cork Hibernians in their 4-1 FAI Cup semi-final victory over Limerick at Flower Lodge. He is the last player to have achieved this feat.

April 7, 2000 - Shelbourne lifted the Premier Division title at the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford. Shels won the league with 69 points, an 11-point gap to second-placed Cork City. The 33-game season, Shelbourne only lost two matches on their way to the title and were managed by Dermot Keely who also secured the FAI Cup, a famous double in the history of the club. 

On This Day in Irish Football | April 7 

April 7, 1936 – Mick McGrath was born in Dublin on this day. He joined Blackburn Rovers from Home Farm in August 1954 and moved to Bradford Park Avenue in March 1966. He helped Blackburn Rovers win promotion to the old First Division and played for them in the 1960 FA Cup Final against Wolves where he had the misfortune to score an own goal in a 3-0 defeat. He won 22 caps for the Republic of Ireland between 1958 and 1967.

April 7, 1996 – Ireland international Josh Cullen was born in Southend-on-Sea on this day.
