10th June 1919: Dr. Kevin O'Flanagan was born on this day in Dublin. Kevin O'Flanagan is one of the most talented muiti-sportsperson from Ireland having played Gaelic Football, Football and Rugby. He played for Home Farm before moving to Bohemians in 1936 and over nine years at the club, he scored 95 goals in 145 appearances at the Dublin club. After the war, he also played for Arsenal and Corinthian Casuals. O'Flanagan made 10 appearances for Ireland between 1937 and 1947, scoring three goals including one on his debut against Norway in 1937. He also played rugby for Ireland and played for UCD and Leinster. After he retired from both codes, he became a sporting administrator and was Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Ireland for a number of years. He passed away on 26th May 2006.

10th June 1933: Gerry Mackey was born on this day in Dublin. The defender started his career in 1951 at Shamrock Rovers and won a number of honours with the club. He won three league titles and two FAI Cups in eight years at the club before moving to Kings Lynn in England in 1959. Mackey made his Ireland debut in a World Cup qualifying match against Denmark at Dalymount Park in October 1956. He also played in the 3-0 win over World Champions West Germany the following month and the World Cup match against England at Wembley Stadium in May 1957. He has the unique distinction of captaining his country at schoolboy, youth and senior level.

10th June 1973: Mark Herrick was born on this day in Cork. Herrick played for both Galway United and Cork City having started his career in the league at Terryland in 1993. During his league career, he made 288 league appearances overall. He is the son of the former Cork Hibernians, Shamrock Rovers and Republic of Ireland international John Herrick.

10th June 1977: David Crawley was born on this day in Dundalk. Crawley was with Manchester City as a schoolboy before moving back to Ireland with his hometown club Dundalk. The Lilywhites won the First Division Title in 2001 and Crawley captained Dundalk to their famous FAI Cup victory in 2001/02, a 2-1 victory over Bohemians in the final. He moved onto Shelbourne where he secured three league titles in four years at the club. He returned to Dundalk and helped the club win the First Division title once again in 2008. He made 382 league appearances overall.

On This Day in Irish Football - 10th June

10th June 2012: The Republic of Ireland suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Croatia in Poznan, Poland. It was Ireland’s first match of the UEFA EURO 2012 Championships as Mario Mandzukic (3, 48) scored a brace and Everton’s Nikica Jelavić (43) found the net for Slaven Bilic’s team. Sean St. Ledger (19) scored the only goal of the game for Ireland.

10th June 2019: The Republic of Ireland secured a 2-0 win over Gibraltar in the UEFA EURO 2020 Championships qualifying match at the Aviva Stadium. Joseph Chipolina (o.g. 29) and Robbie Brady (90) scored the goals to secure the three points.
