On This Day - 16th June

June 16, 1946: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 3-1 defeat to Portugal in the Estádio da Luz, Lisbon, Ireland's first post-war fixture. 

June 16, 1979: Declan O'Brien was born on this day in Dublin. The former Drogheda United striker started his career in 2001 with Drogheda where he stayed for seven years, and won the League title in 2007 and the FAI Cup in 2005. He moved to Dundalk in 2009 and moves to St. Patrick's Athletic, Valletta, Athlone Town and Monaghan United followed. He returned to Drogheda United in 2012 for a two-year spell before he moved to Northern Ireland with Glenavon and Carrick Rangers at the end of his career. 

June 16, 1980: Richie Foran was born on this day in Dublin. The former midfielder started his career with St. Patrick's Athletic in 1998 before a move to Shelbourne a year later kick-started his career. His form impressed and he signed for Carlisle United in 2001. Spells for Oxford United, Motherwell, Southend United and Darlington. He moved to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2009 and he ended his career with the Scottish club in 2016. 

June 16, 1989: Ian Bermingham was born on this day in Dublin. The current St. Patrick's Athletic skipper started his career with UCD AFC in 2007. His form at the Students sealed a move to Shamrock Rovers where he stayed for a season before he moved to St. Patrick's Athletic in in 2010. Bermingham has stayed with the club ever since and has enjoyed incredible success with the club having won the league title in 2013, the FAI Cup in 2014 and the league cup in 2015 & 2016. Bermingham has also been named in the PFAI Team of the Year in 2012, 2013 & 2014. 

June 16, 1993: The Republic of Ireland secured an important three points in 1994 World Cup qualifying with a 1-0 win over Lithuania at the Žalgiris Stadium in Vilnius. Steve Staunton (38) scored the only goal of the game in front of 7,000.  

June 16, 2001: Cork City suffered a narrow defeat in the UEFA Intertoto Cup to Latvian side FK Metalurgs. Aleksandr Katasonov scored the only goal of the game in the 70th minute to seal the victory for the away side at Turner's Cross. 

June 16, 2002: The Republic of Ireland suffered penalty shoot-out heart-break against Spain in the 2002 World Cup in the Round of 16. Fernando Morientes (8) gave Spain the lead before Robbie Keane (90 pen) slotted home a last-minute penalty to force extra-time. After a goalless 30 minutes of extra-time, penalties saw Ireland miss three penalties as Spain won 3-2 on spot-kicks.
