18th June 1946: Ray Treacy was born on this day in Dublin. Treacy had a fantastic career both at home and in England, as well as an impressive international career. Treacy started his career at West Bromwich Albion in 1961 before moves to Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town, Preston North End and back to WBA this time under Johnny Giles. He had a brief spell in Canada with Toronto Metros-Croatia before moving to Shamrock Rovers. Treacy was incredibly successful on his return to Ireland as he helped win the FAI Cup in 1978 when he scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. He ended his playing career with Drogheda United in and as player-manager guided them to the League Cup in 1982/83. He also managed Home Farm and Shamrock Rovers and led the Hoops to the Premier Division League title in 1993/94. He made 42 appearances for the Republic of Ireland after he made his debut in May 1966 in a 4–0 defeat against West Germany at Dalymount Park. He scored five international goals including a brace against Turkey in 1978, which was the last time a player from the League of Ireland had scored for the national team until Graham Burke in 2018. He sadly passed away on 10th April 2015.

18th June 1971: Jason McAteer was born on this day in Birkenhead, England. McAteer had an incredible club career after starting at Bolton Wanderers in 1992 and his form secured his dream move to Liverpool in 1995. He went on to have spells with Blackburn Rovers, Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers before retiring in 2007. McAteer played 52 times for the Republic of Ireland between 1994 and 2004 and was in the 1994 World Cup squad. He made his debut (with Phil Babb and Gary Kelly) against Russia at Lansdowne Road in March 1994. He scored three international goals including his crowning moment came when he scored the only goal of the game in the 1-0 win over the Netherlands at Lansdowne Road on the way to 2002 World Cup qualification.

18th June 1972: Avery John was born on this day in Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago. After graduating from College Football in the USA, John moved to Bohemians in 1999 where he impressed in the league. He had a brief spell back in the States with the Boston Bulldogs before returning to the league with Shelbourne and then Longford Town. He left De Town in 2003 for New England Revolution and spent the rest of his career in the MLS. He was part of the Trinidad & Tobago squad at the 2006 World Cup playing against Sweden and Paraguay but missing the England match due to his red card against Sweden.

18th June 1972: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 3-2 victory in the Brazil Independence Cup against Ecuador in the Machadão, Natal. Cork Hibernians’ Miah Dennehy made his international debut when he came on for Mick Leech as Liam Tuohy's side secured the win with goals from Eamonn Rogers (12), Mick Martin (61) and substitute Turlough O'Connor (88) with Coronel (36) and Lasso (78) scoring for Ecuador.

18th June 1988: The Republic of Ireland suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands in UEFA EURO 1988 at the Parkstadion in Gelsenkirchen before a large attendance of 70,800. Ireland, for whom a draw would have ensured qualification for the semi-finals, were knocked out of the tournament due to the defeat as substitute Wim Kieft (84) scored the only goal of the game.

18th June 1994: The Republic of Ireland secured one of the most impressive results in their history thanks to a 1-0 win over Italy at the 1994 World Cup. At the Giants Stadium in New York, a huge crowd of 75,338, vast majority being Ireland supporters, witnessed Ray Houghton's (11) audacious chip win the game for Jack Charlton's side. Paul McGrath turned in one of the finest individual displays in his career as Ireland kept the Italians at bay in the heat in New York.

18th June 2000: U.C.D. were held to an entertaining 3-3 draw against Bulgarian side FC Velbazhd Kyustendil in a UEFA Intertoto Cup First Round First Leg match. Robert McAuley (12, 61) scored a brace and John Martin (76) scored late on to secure the impressive draw at Belfield.

18th June 2005: Bohemians secured an impressive 1-0 victory over KAA Gent in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. It was a strong Bohemians side which included Ireland international Stephen Ward, Gareth Farrelly and Dominic Foley, who would later sign for the Belgian side, and who were managed by Georges Leekens. Tony Grant scored the only goal of the game in the 49th minute.

18th June 2006: Shelbourne secured an impressive victory in Lithuania in a UEFA Intertoto Cup First Round First Leg match. Sean Dillon's 43rd minute strike was enough to secure a narrow victory over FK Vetra Vilnius for the all-star Shelbourne who had the likes of Joseph N'do, Owen Heary and Ollie Cahill in the starting line-up for Pat Fenlon's side.

18th June 2012: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy in UEFA EURO 2012, the final game of the tournament. Ireland suffered three defeats in the tournament as Antonio Cassano (35) and Mario Balotelli (90) scored for Italy and also had Keith Andrews (89) red carded. Damien Duff captained the side on his 100th and final international appearance at the INEA Stadion in Poznan.

18th June 2016: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 3-0 defeat to Belgium at the UEFA EURO 2016. After a goalless first-half at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique in Bordeaux, Romelu Lukaku (48, 70) scored a brace and Axel Witsel (61) also scored. The match referee was Cuneyt Cakir of Turkey who also was in charge of the above mentioned Italy match in Poznan.
