4th June 1989: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive and crucial 2-0 win over Hungary with 49,600 in attendance at Lansdowne Road. A key victory on the way to 1990 World Cup qualification, Paul McGrath (33) and Tony Cascarino (80) scored the crucial goals to claim the two points at stake. The win moved Ireland three points clear of the Hungarians who had a match in hand but had still to play Spain twice.

4th June 1992: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy in the US Cup at the Foxboro Stadium in Boston. Giuseppe Signori (17) scored the opening goal of the game before Packie Bonner took Signori down inside the penalty area to receive a straight red in the 65th minute. Two minutes later, Alessandro Costacurta slotted home the resulting penalty past substitute goalkeeper Gerry Peyton to claim the win for the strong Italy side which included Walter Zenga, Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi (captain) and Roberto Mancini.

4th June 1996: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands in the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam as the Dutch prepared for UEFA EURO 1996. Gary Breen (14) put Ireland ahead but goals from Dennis Bergkamp (27), Clarence Seedorf (77) and Phillip Cocu (87) secured the home side the win.

4th June 2000: The Republic of Ireland came back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw against Mexico in this US Cup match. Daniel Osorno (38) put the Mexicans ahead before the break and Horacio Sanchez (54) stretched the lead in the second-half. Richard Dunne (60) got one back before Dominic Foley (71) secured the draw in front of 36,459 at Soldiers Field, Chicago.

4th June 2005: The Republic of Ireland were held to a 2-2 draw against Israel in a crucial 2006 World Cup qualifier at Lansdowne Road. Ian Harte (5) and Robbie Keane (11) put Ireland into a comfortable lead before Keane was taken off with an injury. Avi Yehiel (39) got one back and Avi Nimni (45) completed the comeback before the break. Ireland couldn't find the break-through in the second-half and it would prove to be a decisive result in the group against Avram Grant's Israel. Andy O’Brien was red carded with seven minutes remaining.

4th June 2011: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 2-0 win over FYR Macedonia (now known as North Macedonia) in the Philip 11 National Arena in Skopje. A straight-forward victory on route to UEFA EURO 2012 qualification, Robbie Keane (8, 37) scored a first-half double, his 50th and 51st international goals, to secure the comfortable win. Ivan Trichkovski smashed a 41st minute penalty kick against the crossbar.

4th June 2012: The Republic of Ireland were held to a 0-0 draw against Hungary at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. The match took place six days before Ireland faced Croatia in the opening match of UEFA EURO 2012 in Poznan.

4th June 2017: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive friendly victory over Uruguay at the Aviva Stadium. Jonathan Walters (28) opened the scoring before Jose Gimenez (38) levelled ten minutes later. Cyrus Christie (54) put Ireland back in front with his second international goal before James McClean's (77) goal secured the win, six days before Ireland travelled to Vienna to face Austria in a crucial World Cup qualifier.
