On This Day in the LOI – 14th May

14th May 1957: Don O'Riordan was born on this day in Dublin. The former Galway United and Sligo Rovers manager made over 600 appearances in the English Football League during his playing career, most notably at Preston North End and Notts County. He secured promotion to the Premier Division with Galway United and reached the FAI Cup semi-finals twice during his four years in charge. He also managed Sligo Rovers for three years before moving to Sheffield United as part of Neil Warnock's coaching staff. He has since been part of the China & South African women's team coaching staff, managed Chengdu Blades, and managed FC New York.

On This Day in Irish Football - 14th May 

14th May 1958: Three days after drawing in Katowice, Ireland travelled to Vienna to face Austria at the Prater Stadium. Mick McGrath of Blackburn Rovers made his international debut as Austria won by 3-1 in front of 45,000 spectators. Alfred Korner (20), Johann Buzek (59) and Josef Hamerl (79) scored for the Austrians with Dermot Curtis (70) scoring for the Republic of Ireland.

14th May 1979: Clinton Morrison was born on this day in Tooting, London. The former Republic of Ireland international represented Ireland 36 times between 2001 and 2006 and scored nine goals, and also was in the 2002 World Cup squad. He scored on his international debut in a 2-2 draw with Croatia at Lansdowne Road in August 2001. Morrison had a highly successful career in the Football League and Premier League, most notably with Crystal Palace and Birmingham City. He also played for Coventry City and Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship and had spells with MK Dons (loan), Brentford (loan), Colchester United and ended his career at Exeter City in 2016.
