17th May 1968: Paul McGee was born on this day in Dublin. McGee started his career with EMFA before moving to Bohemians in 1987. His form over two years at Dalymount Park attracted the attentions of Colchester United in 1989 the manager by former Rangers boss Jock Wallace. He was snapped up by Bobby Gould's Wimbledon after just three games for Colchester. McGee has a fantastic impact at Wimbledon, scoring the winner at Highbury against Arsenal in 1989 but injuries hampered his progress. After six years with Wimbledon, McGee moved to Linfield before moving back to the league in 1995 with Bohemians. He also played for St. Patrick's Athletic and Athlone Town.

17th May 1968: David Tilson was born on this day in Dublin. After earning a scholarship at UCD AFC, he spent four years with the Students and played for the Republic of Ireland at under-age level whilst at College. In 1989, following his graduation, Tilson signed for Bohemians and went on achieve legendary status at Dalymount Park as he scored the winning goal in the 1992 FAI Cup final against Cork City. He was also part of the Bohemians side which faced Bordeaux in the UEFA Cup first round as Tilson faced up against a certain 21-year old Zinedine Zidane. Tilson also played for Shelbourne and scored 52 goals in 250 league appearances. He now works for the Bank of Ireland as Head of Markets.

On This Day in Irish Football - 17th May 

17th May 1937: The Republic of Ireland defeated Switzerland by 1-0 in a friendly match plated at the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne. The winning goal was scored by Jimmy Dunne on the half-hour mark. Dunne had also scored the only goal when the teams had met at Dalymount Park fourteen months earlier. Dunne had now scored in each of his five international appearances – seven goals in total. Joe O’Reilly (St. James’s Gate) became the first player to win 10 caps in what was Ireland’s 20th international match. Five players made their international debut in this match – Tommy Breen (Manchester United), Johnny Feenan (Sunderland), Johnny Brown (Coventry City), Day Jordan (Wolves) and Paddy Farrell (Hibernian).

17th May 1978: Paddy Kenny was born on this day in Halifax, England. Having started his career in non-league with Bradford Park Avenue, his big break came at Neil Warnock's Bury in 1998 where his form impressed and Warnock re-signed Kenny for Sheffield United after he moved to Bramall Lane. He spent eight years at United before spells at Queen’s Park Rangers, Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers. He made seven appearances for the Republic of Ireland between 2004 when he made his debut against the Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road and 2006.
