21st May 1967: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-0 defeat to Czechoslovakia. The match was a European Championships qualifier played at Dalymount Park. Juraj Szikora (16) and Vojtech Masny (47) scored the goals for the visitors. The match marked the final appearance in an Irish jersey for three players – Theo Foley (9 caps), Charlie Gallagher (2 caps) and Andy McEvoy (17 caps).

21st May 1975: The Republic of Ireland suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Switzerland in the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne. The defeat effectively ended Ireland's hopes of qualifying for the 1976 European Championships as Rudolf Elsener scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute.

Terry Donovan (Aston Villa), whose father Don was also an Irish international, won his second and final cap in this match.

21st May 1982: The Republic of Ireland started their ill-fated three-match tour of South America with a 1-0 defeat to Chile. Eoin Hand struggled to put a squad together for the tour due to complications over the end of the English league season, the FA Cup final replay and the Falklands War, with the squad originally set to face Argentina, and several of the players were British passport holders. Gamboa scored the only goal of the game in the first minute of the game at the Nacional Stadium in Santiago.

21st May 1997: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 5-0 victory over Liechtenstein in a World Cup qualifying match at Lansdowne Road on this day. David Connolly (29, 34, 40), then with Watford, scored a first-half hat-trick and Tony Cascarino (60, 77) netted a brace on the occasion of his 70th international appearance.
