On This Day in Irish Football – 25th May

25th May 1955: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 3-1 win over Norway in Bislett Stadium, Oslo. Luton Town's George Cummins (16, 74) scored a brace and Alf Ringstead added a third eight minutes from time to secure the win. Arne Kotte (34) had equalised for Norway in the first-half. Drumcondra's Dessie Glynn made his second and final international appearance in this match.

25th May 1966: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 3-2 win over Belgium at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in Liege. Noel Cantwell scored a brace (19, 47) and Shamrock Rovers' Johnny Fullam won the match with a 68th minute strike. It was Fullam's only international goal for Ireland in 11 appearances for his country. Paul Van Himst (4) and Godfried Vanden Boer (24) scored for the Belgians.

25th May 1986: The Republic of Ireland defeated Iceland by 2-1 at the Laugardalsvollur in the Iceland Tournament as Niall Quinn made his international debut. Paul McGrath (34) and Gerry Daly (84) scored the goals for Jack Charlton's Ireland to claim the victory over the hosts. Arnór Guðjohnsen, father of Eiður, scored for Iceland in the 40th minute. This was Jack’s first victory as Irish manager following a defeat to Wales and a draw with Uruguay both matches were played at Lansdowne Road.

25th May 2010: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 2-1 victory over Paraguay at the RDS in an international friendly. Kevin Doyle (7) opened the scoring before Liam Lawrence (39) added a second to establish an impressive first-half lead. Lucas Barrios responded in the 57th minute but Ireland held on to claim victory as Paul Green and Cillian Sheridan made their international debuts. This was only the second international match to be played at the venue following the Wales (0-1) match in February 1992.

25th May 2014: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 2-1 defeat against Turkey in an international friendly as Rob Elliot made his international debut. The visitors scored through Ahmet Ozek (17) and Tarik Camdal (75) before Jonathan Walters reduced the arrears three minutes later.
