26th May 1976: The Republic of Ireland defeated Poland by 2-0 in an international friendly match in the Warta Stadium in Poznan. This was Ireland’s first win in Poland having drew one and lost five of the previous six encounters. Two early goals from Don Givens (4,11) secured the victory.

26th May 1985: The Republic of Ireland and Spain drew 0-0 in an international friendly match in Flower Lodge, Cork. It was only the second senior international match to be played outside of Dublin and the first in 46 years since Hungary played at The Mardyke. The match was part of the Cork 800 celebrations. Locally born Kieran O’Regan (Brighton) won his fourth and final cap as a 65th minute substitute for Chris Hughton.

26th May 1992: The Republic of Ireland defeated Albania by 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying match at Lansdowne Road. John Aldridge (60) and Paul McGrath (79) were the Irish goalscorers before an attendance of 29,727 spectators. Mick McCarthy came on as a 51st minute substitute for the injured Kevin Sheedy for what turned out to be both his last competitive appearance and his last match in an Irish shirt at Lansdowne Road.

26th May 1993: The Republic of Ireland defeated Albania by 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match at the Qemal Stafa Stadium in Tirana. The home side took the lead in the seventh minute through Sokol Kushta but Ireland equalised with a goal from Steve Staunton five minutes later. Tony Cascarino replaced John Aldridge in the 74th minute and three minutes later he headed home from a Staunton corner to ensure a vital three points for Ireland in their quest for qualification for the 1994 World Cup Finals in the U.S.A.

26th May 2007: The Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Bolivia at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts in the second and final match of their US Tour. Shane Long put Ireland ahead in the twelfth minute but Miguel Angel Hoyos equalised two minutes later. Peter Murphy of Carlisle United won his only cap in this match. He is now manager of Annan Athletic.

26th May 2012: The Republic of Ireland defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina by 1-0 in the farewell home match before the Euro 2012 Finals in Poland and Ukraine. Shane Long (77) scored the only goal of the match before an attendance of 37,100 at the Aviva Stadium.
