On This Day in Irish Football – 29th May

29th May 1979: The Republic of Ireland were held to a 0-0 draw against Argentina in an unofficial international match in aid of UNICEF. Both Shamrock Rovers' Paddy Mulligan and Bohemians' Eamonn Gregg played a full 90 minutes in front of 25,000 at Lansdowne Road. 

29th May 1994: The Republic of Ireland secured a famous victory over Germany at the Niedersachsenstadion in Hannover. As part of the 1994 World Cup preparations, Ireland travelled to Germany and sealed a fantastic victory in the international friendly. Tony Cascarino (31) and Gary Kelly (69) scored the goals in the 2-0 victory.

29th May 1996: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 1-0 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly at Lansdowne Road. António Folha scored the only goal of the game in the final minute to seal the win as David Connolly, Gareth Farrelly, Dave Savage, Keith O'Neill and Gary Breen all made their debuts.

29th May 1999: The Republic of Ireland suffered a narrow defeat in an international friendly against Northern Ireland at Lansdowne Road. The match was a peace international which would raise money for charitable causes as Danny Griffin scored the only goal for Lawrie McMenemy's Northern Ireland side with five minutes to play with 12,100 in attendance.

29th May 2004: The Republic of Ireland suffered a 3-0 defeat to Nigeria in an international friendly at The Valley in London. Clive Clarke made his international debut whilst it was Stephen McPhail's tenth and final appearance in an Ireland shirt. Bartholomew Ogbeche (36, 69) and Obefemi Martins (50) scored for Nigeria.

29th May 2008: The Republic of Ireland secured an impressive 1-0 win over Colombia in an international friendly at Craven Cottage in London. Robbie Keane scored the only goal of the game in the third minute against a Colombia side which featured the likes of Cristian Zapata and Freddy Guarin.

29th May 2009: The Republic of Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw against Nigeria at Craven Cottage in London. In front of 11,000 at the home of Fulham FC, Michael Enemaro put the Nigerians ahead in the 30th minute before Robbie Keane equalised eight minutes later. The match saw debuts for Eddie Nolan, Kevin Foley, Keiren Westwood, Liam Lawrence and Leon Best.

29th May 2011: The Republic of Ireland battled to a 1-0 win over Scotland to lift the Carling Nations Cup at the Aviva Stadium. In front of 17,694 supporters, Robbie Keane scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute to secure the victory and the competition's title.

29th May 2013: The Republic of Ireland and England drew 1-1in an international friendly at Wembley Stadium before an attendance of 80,126. Backed by over 10,000 Irish supporters, Shane Long headed Ireland into a 13th minute lead before Frank Lampard equalised in style just ten minutes later.
