7th May 1952: Ireland’s first-ever meeting with Austria resulted in a then record 6-0 at the Prater Stadium in Vienna. Adolf Huber (22, 23, 25) scored an incredible three-minute first-half hat-trick with Walter Haummer (36) and Robert Dienst (61, 81) completing the rout. Frank O’Farrell of West Ham United who would go on to manage Manchester United made his international debut in this match. Included in the Austrian line-up was Ernst Happel who went on to great success as manager and after whom the stadium was renamed following his death in 1992.

7th May 1961: Ireland played only their second game against Scotland on this day. Scotland ran out winners by 3-0 in a World Cup qualifying match at Dalymount Park before a crowd of 46,000. Alex Young (4,16) and Ralph Brand (86) scored for the Scots who had won by 4-1 in Glasgow just four days earlier. Mick Meagan (Everton) who would go on to be Ireland's first player-manager, made his international debut in this match with Andy McEvoy (Blackburn Rovers) winning his second cap having made his debut in the Glasgow match four days earlier.

7th May 1989: Derry City won the FAI Cup for the first time in their history when they defeated Cork City by 1-0 in a replayed final at Dalymount Park after the sides had drawn 0-0 at the same venue on the previous Sunday. Felix Healy scored the winning goal in the 12th minute to ensure that Derry City became the first, and so far only, club to have won the domestic treble of League championship, FAI Cup and League Cup competitions. Jim McLaughlin was winning the Cup for a record sixth time as a manager following his previous successes with Dundalk (1977, 1979 and 1981) and Shamrock Rovers (1985 and 1986).

7th May 1992: Robbie Benson was born on this day in Athlone. The 28-year old started his career with hometown club Athlone Town before signing for UCD AFC where he could play but also complete his studies, a master's degree in actuarial science. He played for UCD AFC during their European run in 2015 and Stephen Kenny snapped him up in 2016. He was highly successful with Dundalk, scoring three goals in Europe during the European run of 2016 and helping the Lilywhites secure three league titles. Benson moved to St. Patrick's Athletic ahead of the 2020 season.

7th May 1992: Former Waterford winger Sander Puri was born on this day in Tartu, Estonia. Puri moved to the SSE Airtricity League in 2014 with Sligo Rovers from York City in England. Puri scored four goals in 27 appearances for the Bit O'Red before he moved to Karviná in the Czech Republic. He returned to the SSE Airtricity League in 2017 with Waterford and he helped them lift the First Division League title during his one season with the club. He currently plays for Nõmme Kalju in his native Estonia. He has been capped 78 times scoring 4 goals.

7th May 1995: Kevin O'Connor was born on this day in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. He played youth football with St. Patrick’s Athletic before joining Waterford United in 2013 and after impressing for the First Division club, Cork City snapped him in 2015. His time at Turner's Cross was highly successful and his lone goal in a 1-0 win over Swedish club Hacken saw Cork City progress in the UEFA Europa League. Preston North End signed O'Connor in August 2017 (along with Sean Maguire) and he has since had spells at Fleetwood Town, Crewe Alexandra and back to Cork City. O'Connor was signed by Waterford on loan for the 2020 season.

7th May 1995: Derry City won the FAI Cup for the second time in their history when they defeated Shelbourne by 2-1 in the final at Lansdowne Road. Peter Hutton (9) and Stuart Gauld pen, 72) scored for the Candystripes with Greg Costello (pen. 75) scoring for Shelbourne. Felix Healy, scorer of the winning goal three years earlier was Derry’s manager on this occasion with Colin Murphy, the former Derby County and Lincoln City manager in the other dug out. Costello’s goal meant that he is the only player to have scored in two different FAI Cup Finals at Lansdowne Road having netted the winner against Dundalk two years earlier.
