Cabinteely boss Pat Devlin was understandably disappointed following his side’s 2-0 home defeat against Longford Town on Friday evening.
In what was an evenly contested game at Stradbrook, the visitors made the most of their chances, which could not be said of the hosts, and deserved their win.
“I have to be brutally honest and I do think Longford were the better team on the night,” Devlin told SSE Airtricity League reporter Conor Clancy after the match.
“Mick [Kelly] pulled off four or five successful saves. We should have been two up before they scored, but then they got the second one and we went to a 3-5-2 then.
“We missed a penalty and a couple of other chances but in fairness Longford deserved to win it.
Having been knocked out of the FAI Cup by surprise package Bluebell United, Cabinteely have little left to play for and Devlin thinks that might be one of the reasons behind the result.
“We’re in the middle of nowhere,” he said.
“We’re out of the cup, we’ve nowhere to go and we’re chopping and changing – looking at players for next year and giving games to players who haven’t had a run.
“Over the next three games we need to settle things down, stop making excuses and get on with it.”
The South Dublin side are now three games without a win, following a seven-match unbeaten streak and Devlin is keen to get back to winning ways.
“Three defeats in a row is unusual for us.
“We have to bounce back and with three games left we have nothing to lose so we will see what we can do in the games we have.”
