Like all goods things that come to an end, Cabinteely FC’s record unbeaten run came to an end on Friday in the 11th game in all competitions.

Galway United left Stradbrook on Friday with their first SSE Airtricity First Division victory since last May when securing a 1-0 success.

But with Bray Wanderers drawing 3-3 with Cobh Ramblers, the two results still leave Cabo in fourth – in the last play-off position, and four points ahead of the Seagulls with just three league games remaining.

With that in mind, Pat Devlin knows their fate is still in their own hands.

“None of the remaining games are going to be easy. It’s been in our own hands all year. When you get to the top of the tree, and think you can get somewhere, we always seem to take a step back” mused the Cabinteely Director of Football.

After the FAI Cup loss to Cork City last week, the White and Greens face in a two-week break before their next outing away to Cobh at the end of the month.

“I think they (the players) deserve and need a break. I can’t fault the players effort. That effort has been great” he stressed.

Reflecting on the loss to Galway, Devlin said “We had lots of possession but didn’t show any creativity at all. Fair play to Galway. They got the goal; sat there and off they went. They got the three points. We didn’t deserve anything else out of it. Maybe a draw. We didn’t create enough. It was a disappointing game.”

He added “It was never going to be an easy game. We just weren’t at the races. Yes, we dominated possession the whole game. But we didn’t get many chances. The one’s we got, they were half chances and scuffs. We were just missing that bit of finesse, that little bit of magic. That’s football. We move on and don’t look back.”
