Danny Doyle was the toast of Wexford FC on Friday evening as his goal with 15 minutes remaining earned the Slaneysiders a morale-boosting share of the spoils against Shelbourne at Ferrycarrig Park.

The talented teenager had been sprung from the bench just two minutes earlier and his impact was instant as he steered the ball to the net after Dean Kelly's corner had been headed back across the face of goal by Owen McCormack to make it 1-1, giving the hosts a precious point.

The under-19 star was delighted to get the chance to make such a telling contribution, notching his first senior goal for Damian Locke's side.

β€œI was delighted to come on tonight. When you're training hard all week it's a dream come true to come off the bench and score an important goal. It's great to get something from our final home game of the season,” he said.

Shelbourne had taken the lead thanks to a beautifully-executed lob from James Brown just before the interval and although the home side had to ride their luck at times, they showed admirable resolve to eke something out of the game.

Doyle believes the Slaneysiders have shown steady improvement as the season has wore on, thanks to their unity and work ethic, and he would love to finish the campaign on a high with a positive result in Longford in two weeks time.

β€œIt's definitely been a learning trek all season for me and for the whole team and I think we've improved a lot, so hopefully we can take something from our last game against Longford Town,” he said.
