Graham Doyle was looking on the bright side after Wexford FC played out a scoreless stalemate against Longford Town in their First Division clash at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

The club captain, who is sidelined after picking up an injury in the recent defeat to Shelbourne at Tolka Park, said there was plenty to like about his side's display.

“The performance was more positive than the last couple of weeks. The lads have started a new system, 3-5-2, and it suits the way we're playing,” said the veteran goalkeeper.

The one area where the Slaneysiders have been struggling is putting the ball in the back of the net but Doyle believes if they stick to what they're doing, it's only a matter of time before things click in the final third.

“We created a few chances tonight, so once we get the system right the goals will come. We were solid the whole way through. We got a couple of half-chances, I wouldn't say we created massively but that will come, especially with young lads, like Danny Doyle that came on, there's lots of positivity. We've been spoiled with having Danny Furlong for the last couple of years but once the boys get a couple of goals they'll start to flow. Once we're getting it right at the other end it gives us something to build on,” he said.

Doyle says it won't be long before he has recovered from injury and he will be back in the fold in the not too distant future, but he was full of praise for his young understudy Corey Chambers after he kept a clean sheet.

“I'll be out for a couple of weeks but if Corey keeps playing the way he did tonight I might not get back in,” he said.

Wexford FC have another home fixture to look forward to next Friday night when they lock horns with Cobh Ramblers at Ferrycarrig Park and Doyle believes it's a decent opportunity to get their first win on the board.

“We always seem to play well against them. They're a team that we like playing against so if we can improve another ten per cent on tonight we can get a win,” he said.
