Drogheda United assistant manager Kevin Doherty praised his side’s professionalism after they defeated Wexford 2-0 at United Park.

Goals in either half from Chris Lyons and Sean Brennan sealed a hard fought win over a side that Drogheda had beaten 8-1 earlier in the campaign with Doherty quick to note that it was always going to be a tougher encounter this time around.

“What happened down in Ferrycarrig Park was a freak result,” the former Shelbourne manager admitted post-match. “Everything we hit that night went in.

"We were under no illusions that it would be a repeat result tonight. I think last week’s narrow win away in Athlone was a reminder that the sides near the bottom are certainly getting stronger.

“If I had any complaints about tonight it was that we could’ve been more clinical. We had a lot of chances to put the game to bed before we did but it was great to get another three points on the board.”

Doherty reserved special praise for goalscorer Lyons as well as left-back Conor Kane, whose lung-bursting run won the penalty from which Brennan doubled the Drogs’ advantage.

“I think Chris has probably been one of our best players so far this season. He does so much more than just scoring goals; his hold-up play, running in behind defences and decision-making are excellent. That’s essentially two match-winners that he’s scored in the space of a week.

“Conor is a player with so much potential. I think it’s clear for everyone to see how good he is going forward, I’m not sure Wexford knew how to stop him but he’s also improving all the time defensively. He has a really bright future ahead of him.”

With successive wins over the bottom two secured, the Boynesiders are likely to face a sterner test next week away to fellow promotion hopefuls Galway United.

“They’re a full-time team with a lot of quality players so it’s going to be a real challenge for us. The league table is so tight at the minute; I think there are only a handful of points separating four or five sides.

“I don’t think many people were expecting Cobh Ramblers to win away to Finn Harps this evening so it just shows again that anything can happen in this division."
