Drogheda United have confirmed that experienced midfielder Sean Thornton has retired from football with immediate effect.

Thornton returned to Ireland in 2015 after a long career in England and Wales to turn out for his hometown club and helped them seal promotion to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

The 34-year-old remained an important player in Pete Mahon's side, but he has decided to call time on his days with The Boynesiders after 14 goals in 73 games.

"Everyone at Drogheda United would like to wish Sean and his family all the best and we look forward to welcoming them to United Park on a regular basis," read a club statement.
