Following his goal scoring heroics, Pat Hoban spoke of the healthy rivalry that existed between Dundalk and Cork that has continued since his first period at the club.

Normal service it seems has resumed between the two clubs as the pair look to trade knock out blows when it comes to the race to the SSE Airtricity League title.

“Obviously I haven’t been here in the last number of seasons, so I was coming in with a different mindset I suppose, I know I have heard a lot of what has been said over the couple of years, I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but saying that we have no bottle. Tonight they are leaving going back to Cork saying those boys have bottle this year.

“I thought everyone from the keeper to the boys on the bench, we fought for each other, thats what you have to do to win games. Dundalk and Cork have great fighting spirit, they made it in a dogged game and it was tough to play against but I thought today from everyone was up for it, ready and getting the early goal helped it was a great fighting spirit from the boys.”

With Stephen Kenny deploying players into positions with specific tactical roles, Hoban stressed the importance of the whole team ethos and its betterment of the team overall.

“Thats what players like Chris Shields are good at, I just thought they played a lot of long balls, second balls, we just had to make sure we were ready for that second ball and from the off we could tell we were up for it and we have be like that every week.

“It was just great fighting spirit from the boys and I can’t say anymore, its a great win because we haven’t beaten them in a while and it is frustrating but we are a very good footballing side but sometimes you have to win ugly and today we won ugly.”
