The Football Association of Ireland today expressed its sympathy to the family of former Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Paddy Henderson who passed away over the weekend.

Henderson was part of the Shamrock Rovers side that won the FAI Cup in 1962 and the League of Ireland Shield the following season.

He played for Welsh club Holyhead Town in Wales before signing for Rovers in 1961. He played for the Hoops in the European Cup against SK Rapid Wien in 1965 before signing for Drogheda United the same year. He was forced to retire with a back injury in 1967.

Paddy’s sons David, Stephen and Wayne were all top class goalkeepers while grandson Stephen Jnr is currently at Nottingham Forest.

“We are very saddened to hear of the death of Paddy Henderson. He was a top class player in his day and supported the league and Irish football over the years following the careers of his sons and grandson,” said FAI Director of Competitions Fran Gavin.

“The Association wishes to pass on its condolences to the Henderson family at this sad time.”

FAI CEO John Delaney added: "The Hendersons are a great football family and we are very saddened at their loss. It has been a remarkable achievement for all of them to reach the level that they have in the game with Paddy the inspiration to his sons and grandson Stephen also. We will pay tribute to Paddy at the Moldova game and look forward to welcoming the family there that evening."
