Finn Harps ended a run of five straight league defeats with a 2-0 home victory over North West Rivals Sligo Rovers to lift them off the basement of the table. The win, courtesy of a goal in each half by Nathan Boyle, takes the Ballybofey Outfit above UCD although the Students have three games in hand. Despite a positive performance and result, Ollie Horgan noted that their current league position is little to get excited about. “It doesn’t matter where you are at this stage, it matters where you are come the end of October.” he said. “We ran our luck a little bit, the first goal is vital and thankfully we got it, it gave us something to hang onto.” he added. Having suffered five defeats in a row, Horgan noted that the win is a bit of a boost but pointed out that his side may have been unfortunate in their previous outings. “Some of them games were out the window but tonight we worked well, they had a couple of near misses in both halves.” “Sam Warde hit a free kick that Mark Anthony McGinley saved after a couple of minutes, it’s a completely different game if you concede first and unfortunately in those five game mentioned, we conceded first.” Controversy came to Finn Park midway through the first half as Ed McGinty spilled a shot by Former Sligo Rovers man Raff Cretaro, it appeared to creep over the line but at the crucial moment, the linesman slipped and thus the goal was not given. Horgan noted that these things happen in football and praised the officials. “I felt it was over the line, to be fair to McGinty he got back but the way he pushed it out looked a little bit guilty.” he laughed. “We could see the linesman on his backside, no fault of his, he raced up the line but to be fair to him, he admitted at the end of the game that he just didn’t see it and I give him credit for that, thankfully it didn’t cost us.” he added. This fixture was the first of three in eight days for Harps and the upcoming tie with UCD is surely going to be pivotal for both sides come the business end of the campaign. “All upcoming games are tough, tell me, what is an easy game? he asked. “We are probably the easy game to most people, we will move on from tonight, we don’t dwell to long in defeat and we certainly won’t be dwelling too long in one victory in six.” he concluded
