Limerick FC got off to the perfect start on their return to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division with a 5-1 win over Sligo Rovers at the Markets Field.

New striker Rodrigo Tosi was star turn for the Super Blues, scoring a hat-trick on debut. The Brazilian arrived from Indonesia in the off season and is already a cult hero with the Limerick fans.

Speaking after the game, Tosi was clearly delighted with his debut for his new club. “It was a brilliant start, not just for me but for the team,” he said. “It’s a good thing to win the first match at home.

“The 5-1 result was a little bit surprising even though we worked hard in the last month. All the work has paid off and at the end of the day it’s all about this.

“I always expect to score the goals – I am a striker but to start with three goals it is really like a dream.

“At the beginning (pre-season) it was a little bit different but now they know the way they have to cross for me. I will always be there and in the right position.”

It could have been a completely different night for both Limerick and their new star striker as an issue over his eligibility to play in the game arose on Thursday night.

Thanks to the diligent work of Limerick FC Operations Manager Kieran Judge, Tosi’s registration from Indonesia came through and he was cleared to make his debut.

“I was really worried because I am here for over a month,” said Tosi. “Before yesterday the club said that we need to see your transfer and I said ok we have to work on this.

“On Thursday night it was 50/50 if it would work out or not and even in the morning I didn’t know what to do.

“I was just all the time watching my phone and waiting for some good news.

Around 12pm I got the good news and I was really happy to play at our pitch," the Brazilian striker concluded.
