Shamrock Rovers and Bray Wanderers were both playing their fourth match in eleven days but the home side coped much the better and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners in this rearranged league tie at the Tallaght Stadium.

Rovers brought this match forward due to their Europa League commitments in July and will be well pleased with the result. It gives the Hoops their sixth home win of the season and brings them level on points with Derry City, admittedly having played one game more. Rovers opened much the brighter and deservedly led by 2-0 inside 20 minutes.

There was an element of fortune about the build up to their opener in the fifth minute. Ronan Finn’s intended through ball for Gary Shaw hit the striker’s back and fell kindly for Brandon Miele, who played on the right side tonight. Miele finished coolly with a low shot into the left corner of Peter Cherrie’s net. Cherrie could do little about that one. He did half parry Gary Shaw’s 20th minute shot but the ball still had enough momentum to crawl over the line to put Rovers two up.

A pinpoint pass from impressive skipper Ronan Finn had put Shaw in on goal. Rovers had opportunities to add to their tally after half time with the pacy Trevor Clarke impressing down their left side. Substitute Michael O’Connor had the best chance when his 79th minute shot beat Cherrie but rebounded off the left hand upright.

Otherwise, Bray’s offside trap just about held them at bay. Bray were restricted to some Gary McCabe half chances and manager Harry Kenny will have much to ponder ahead of Friday’s away encounter against Limerick.
