With the top four teams before this weekend all losing on Friday or Saturday, Limerick FC boss Tommy Barrett said he wasn’t surprised by the series of First Division results. Joint leaders Shelbourne, Bray Wanderers and Athlone Town all suffered defeats. And the Shannonsiders moved to within a single point of the three clubs above them by defeating Cabinteely FC 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. “I knew at the start of this season that it is a tough Division. There’s no-one exceptional side. Obviously, Bray and Shels who look on paper top sides. Longford and Drogheda too. They are too many people at the start of the campaign who would be the top four.” He added; “Pitches aren’t great at the moment; teams are still finding their rhythm. You can’t really tell until ten to 12 games. The table then might start to show were teams are at.” Having been relegated from the top-flight last year, the Blue’s claimed their first away success since September 2018 by defeating Cabinteely who had the opportunity to go top of the charts. “It was a great win – I was delighted with it. Stradbrook is a tough place to come to. But we dug in and get a good result,” Barrett stated. With the tie balanced at 1-1, Limerick custodian Jack Brady saved Robert Manley’s penalty before Connor Ellis snatched victory. “I thought we dominated the first half hour. In the second half, was it a penalty? Our player (Robbie Williams) stands his ground. I don’t think he’s supposed to move out of (Keith Dalton’s) way. It was a good save by Jack. But I thought we created the better chances after that.” He continued; “We hadn’t scored in the first three games. We seem to have addressed that now; we’re creating chances. Hopefully we can take a few more and build on it going forward.”
