Conor Keeley was unsurprisingly a satisfied man after helping Cabinteely to a deserved win over Wexford FC in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

The defender's well-taken first-half penalty meant the Dubliners returned up the N11 with a precious three points in the bag.

However, Wexford were playing quite well up until the sucker-punch of the goal and Keeley agreed that getting their noses in front was the pivotal moment in the contest.

“The goal definitely settled us. Coming down here is always tough, but the goal changed the game. Once we got in front we got on top afterwards,” he said.

Cabinteely had one or two scares early on, particularly when Dean George struck the crossbar with a fine effort in the 24th minute, but they controlled the contest after Keeley's opener on the half hour mark, although they couldn't find a second goal that would have killed off the game.

“We couldn't add the second, but thankfully one goal was enough to give us the points. It's always a great battle between us and Wexford. Two very dogged teams, two very physical teams and it's nice for the first time in a while to get on top of them,” he said.

Keeley took the responsibility of taking the spot-kick and stuck it away with great confidence, although he did admit that there were one or two butterflies in the stomach.

“There was a bit of nerves but I struck it well and it's just good to get the win,” he said.
The 20-year-old believes Cabinteely have what it takes to make a push for a play-off place, but doesn't want to look too far ahead, wisely preferring to take things one step at a time.

“The main thing is just to keep going game by game and keep trying to get positive results. We've only won four games out of ten, so we need to just take it one game at a time and hopefully towards the end of the season we can hit those play-off places. It's a tough league and no game is easy, but we just have to play at our best each week and hope we get as many wins as we can,” he said.
