Georgie Kelly showed Dundalk fans why Stephen Kenny was so insistent on getting the Donegal native with a brilliant headed finish to open his goal scoring account for the Lilywhites.

The former UCD player arrived in July and has been waiting for that opening goal, all good things come to those who wait it seems.

“The first one is always the toughest as they say and it’s a great relief just to get that first one and to get off the mark. The minutes as well are most important and getting 70 to 80 minutes and getting the win is well is fantastic.

Kelly recognises the task ahead for Dundalk in the next few weeks and with the fixtures coming thick and fast for Stephen Kenny’s men, strength and depth is the key in order to continue the title challenge in the SSE Airtricity League.

“The depth of this squad is fantastic and realistic thats what you need to do well in these competitions and coming into the last months of the season with the amount of games and cups, its vital

With Pat Hoban on 24 goals this season, the striker is in flying form but Kelly knows that he needs to be able to also make an impact, Kelly has an ambitious aim that will endear himself to the Oriel Park faithful.

“Listen thats all you can hope for, get in a shift and I got a goal tonight. But the key for me now is for me to come on make an impact and score big goals, thats my goals at the minute. So hopefully I will get a chance and get a few in the run up coming into the end of the season”

With the constant talk of whether or not to remain in Ireland in order to compete and complete in both Education and football, Georgie a graduate of UCD sees the real benefits of the education/football balance and how it prepares players in years to come. But how does the step up fair when coming to a club like Dundalk?

“Thats a tough question and its kind of yes and no. The philosophy of UCD is perfect, to build players to make that step. The attitude, nutrition and fitness the stepping stone is perfect. Then on the other side the step up in quality and intensity and professionalism is huge as well.”

Since arriving in July, with a Europa league run under his belt Kelly feels right at home following his move and hopefully that trend will continue.

“How could you not it’s a fantastic place and the people have been brilliant so how could you not?"
