Limerick earned their first win of the season after seeing off Cobh Ramblers on a 3-1 scoreline at the Markets Field.

The victory moves Tommy Barrett’s men onto five points and up to sixth place in the SSE Airtricity League First Division table.

Kieran ‘Red’ Hanlon hit the target twice, while Connor Ellis also found the net for a Limerick side that hadn’t scored in their first three games.

“It’s been a tough start,” Ellis admitted after the win. “We have played three out of the so called top four on paper.

“We were unlucky in the last few weeks, particularly up in Bray. I was itching to get back after the penalty miss there and it was good to get off the mark tonight.”

Limerick missed several chances to take the lead before Hanlon finally found a way past Adam Mylod after 13 minutes.

Ellis then made it 2-0 on the half hour with a stunning solo effort that began inside his own half. He said that the goal gave him huge boost for the rest of the game.

“I snatched at the first effort, but I suppose like any centre forward once you get the first goal you get so much more confidence.

“You don’t want to be six our seven games without a goal. Once you get one you kind of don’t mind if it’s three or four games before the next one.”

Hanlon and Ellis were a handful for Cobh’s defence in the first half. The former Cobh man had to plough a lonely furrow up front for Limerick last season and was delighted to have a partner to feed off.

“A lot of praise has to go to Kieran. I’d be the first to admit that my hold up play is the weakest part of my game as I’m not as physically strong as some of the centre halves.

“I think last year because we didn’t have the luxury to play two up top I found myself wasting a lot of energy and not doing what I could do on the right side of the pitch.

“Being able to get onto his flick ons or get out wide and run at the full backs suited me a lot more. Once we play more together, we should go from strength to strength.”
