Limerick FC boss Neil McDonald could only be described as flummoxed after watching his side lose their fourth game in five as Shamrock Rovers came away with a 2-0 win at the Markets Field.

Following a very poor performance, McDonald apologised to Limerick’s fans on behalf of his players and himself as the club drift closer to a relegation battle.

“My emotions are a bit all over the place at the moment,” he admitted when speaking after the game. “We weren’t very good, certainly with the ball.

“We have conceded another goal from a set play that has put us behind again. We didn’t play anywhere near where we have in the past.”

“We have just got to a level that we can’t seem to get past. That’s the most frustrating thing as it’s not for the want of effort.”

The game was a 50/50 contest up until the time that Rovers took the lead on 41 minutes through a Dave McAllister header.

It was all Rovers from that point and they cruised to victory once Ronan Finn doubled the advantage in the second half.

“At half time we tried to lift the players by saying to them to pass and move the ball better, but every little basic that we did wasn’t done very well and that’s why we have gone behind. Not getting the basics right has cost us dearly.”

After witnessing another poor showing, the home fans left nobody at the game in any doubt what they thought about the performance and McDonald agreed with their sentiments.

“I thought they had every right to shout and ball at me as well as the players because we have let them down," McDonald admitted.

“We have to make sure we don’t face the wrath of the fans. They have certainly got behind us whenever we have needed them to and they have every right to have a go as we didn’t play very well.

“I apologise on behalf of the players, because they are the ones that go out and cross the line and I apologise myself because that performance wasn’t good enough,” the Limerick boss concluded.
