It was a big night for Galway United in the Extra.ie FAI Cup as they pulled off a major upset when they dumped Cork City out of the competition. The Tribesmen won 1-0 on the night, with the goal coming from a Conor Melody header and progress in the competition means a lot to the side according to their manager, Alan Murphy. “It was a good win, we prepared well and we executed well and we were worthy winners,” Murphy said, speaking after the game. “It means a huge amount to these players that got stick all year. Inexperienced, making mistakes, trying to recover from mistakes, filling in different places with people out injured and this is really what they deserve. “They deserve a performance and a big win this season because this is a different kind of Galway United that’s here in front of you. It’s nothing to do with mercenaries coming in, or professionals that aren’t professional and application that’s not there. “This is a bunch of largely amateur players that have put their shoulder to the wheel all year long, that have worked tirelessly that have given their all with passion, and they’re learning. Their performance was one of real calculation and execution.” Murphy also spoke of what this means to him as a manager in a season where things have not been going his way on the pitch for the most part, he also paid tribute to Galway’s fans on an historic night for the west of Ireland club. “It means a lot personally because there have been question marks over what I’ve been doing. There’s been question marks over results versus performances and decisions in terms of team. "This is a long road that I’m taking, this is not this season or this is not a game or two games, this is bubbling up all season.” “This is coming from performances that we’ve lost one nil in games and made a really poor error here and there. This is not easy for players, inexperienced players to make mistakes and be ridiculed about them. They’re kids, they’re learning their way in senior league of Ireland football and that’s a huge step up for most of these lads. “These guys will only get better and we’ll only be able to move forward and that’s what I’m about. “ We’ve paid back a little bit to the fans tonight, they’ve had it hard all season, I understand that but that’s a historical moment out there tonight it’s the first time we’ve beaten Cork City in the cup.”
