Cork City midfielder Gearoid Morrissey had praised his side’s professionalism after they defeated Drogheda United 4-1 at United Park to maintain their perfect start to the new season.

The Leesiders took full advantage of Drogheda midfielder Richie Purdy’s early dismissal to record a commanding win and the former Cambridge United man believes City have picked up a valuable three points.

"We knew coming up here that it was going to be difficult and that Drogheda would be very fit and organised,” Morrissey explained after the game. “Drogheda were always going to compete really hard and it was up to us to match that.

“We started brightly to be fair, there was a good tempo to our play and we dominated the game. It died down after the red card but we’re thankful to get the win as there’s no doubt that Drogheda will take points off teams at United Park.”

Cork are the leading scores in the Premier Division with nine strikes from three games and goalscorer Morrissey feels that City’s strength going forward bodes well for the future.

“It’s good to see that we’re spreading the goals around the team,” the 25-year-old said. "Obviously someone like Sean Maguire is going to get goals every other week but the rest of us need to help out if you’re going to win the league.

"It’s not often that I get on the score sheet. We’ve worked on set-pieces throughout the week and I was actually going to run to the back post when one of the lads told me to switch it up and try the near post. It was a good ball in by Steven Beattie and thankfully I was able to apply the finish.”

Despite only three games having been played, there is a familiar look to the league table with both Cork and Dundalk the only teams to still possess 100% records though Morrissey is confident his teammates will keep their feet on the ground.

“We know that there are teams who are really strong this year but we have to take it game by game, week by week. It’s another challenge against Sligo Rovers on Monday but it’s too early to be looking at the league table. We just want to focus on our game, get the result and let whatever else take care of itself."
