SSE Airtricity League Premier Division side Limerick have confirmed the appointment of Neil MacDonald as the new first-team manager.

The 51-year old has previously managed Carlisle United and Blackpool, and has been assistant to former Limerick manager Sam Allardyce at West Ham United, Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.

The Shannonsiders unveiled MacDonald this morning at a press conference and he is expected to take charge of Limerick’s next SSE Airtricity League fixture against Dundalk, tomorrow at Markets Field with kick-off at 7.45pm.

He takes over from interim manager Willie Boland who took charge in April after the club parted ways with Martin Russell.

MacDonald said: "I'm really proud get this role at a big club like Limerick. Everyone I've spoke to since I came across earlier in the week has spoke so highly of the club.

"They're trying to progress it here and bring it to the next level, not just on the first-team but all the way down to youth team level as well. It's a great project to be involved with and I'm really looking forward to getting started.

"The immediate aim is to win the next game and then the game after that to see if we can possibly get into that top three and have a strong season here."
