Longford Town striker David O'Sullivan got off the mark in the 2017 season in some style following his hat-trick against Athlone Town.

Alan Mathews' side claimed their first victory of the season in the Midlands Derby at the Athlone Town Stadium as David O'Sullivan netted an impressive hat-trick.

Speaking after the game, O'Sullivan was delighted to see Longford claim their first win of the campaign and hopes it will spark the 2017 season into life.

O'Sullivan said: "It was very important to come here and get the three points after our sluggish start. We played well against Shels but we were poor against Cobh Ramblers.

"To get the win in the way we did, it shows how good we can be and it's great for the group. We know in the dressing room how good we can be and we hadn't showed that before tonight.

"Hopefully this win kicks us on a bit now and puts us on a good run for the rest of the season.

"It was great to get the first goal for one as I hadn't scored so far this season and missed a penalty against Shelbourne so it's great to get off the mark.

"After getting over that first goal hump, I want them to start flowing now. It's great to get the win but from a personal perspective, it's also great to get on the score-sheet.

"We've got Cabinteely at home next which we'll need to win and then we've got a massive game against UCD after that so we've really got to kick on now."
