Limerick FC cruised to victory over Drogheda United at the Markets Field thanks in no large part to a man of the match performance by recent signing Chiedozie Ogbene.

Ogbene has instantly become a fans favourite following his January move from Cork City and was delighted to net his first goal for the club against Drogheda.

Speaking after the game, Ogbene said that his recent fine form is down to the club putting faith in its young players.

“Limerick is a club that allows you to express yourself,” Ogbene explained. “As a young player coming through it’s much easier to get on the ball.

“Credit to the players around me; They’re very supportive, encouraging and made it very easy for me during the game.

“Encouraging me to take on defenders and get on the ball. My first goal came and I’m very happy to get it.”

Many were surprised that Ogbene left the Leesiders for Limerick in the off-season, but the pacey winger has no regrets about the decision to move on.

“I knew within my first three days that I had made the right decision by moving to Limerick. It’s a club that is very good for development.

“You reach an age when you have to make a decision and I’m eager to get to the next level. The club is eager to get to the next level and that’s why I made the decision. I don’t regret it and I’m really enjoying every bit of it.”

Despite the man of the match award, 19-year-old Ogbene admitted that he is far from the finished article and that there are plenty of areas where he can improve.

“I was happy with my performance, but I need to touch up in a few areas. You always have to be satisfied with what you have done and hopefully learn from my mistakes and improve in every way you can.”
