Cobh Ramblers manager Stephen Henderson was happy to see his side claim three points on Saturday evening with a 2-1 victory over Wexford FC.

This was a match that Ramblers dominated from beginning to end but their failure to be clinical in front of goal was once again exposed. After spurning a number of glorious opportunities, Ramblers found the breakthrough in the opening stages of the second half when an unfortunate Ryan Nolan handled in the box. Darren Murphy scored the resulting penalty smashing high into the net beyond the returning Corey Chambers.

A terrific run from man of the match Denzil Fernandes allowed him to set up Stephen Christopher who doubled the home side’s lead. To their credit, Wexford battled on and found a way back into the game through Kelly but Ramblers held on for the win. Henderson was delighted with the victory which keeps his team in touch of Cabinteely.

“I thought it was a game that we dominated. It was a game that we probably should have wrapped up at half time. We are continuously making stuff hard for ourselves, it really was a game in which we should have been out of sight but unfortunately when we went 2-0 up that was the key moment to go three or four but we let in a sloppy goal. That allowed them right back in it but we saw the game out well.”

“We’ve identified 6 points as our aim between now and the mid-season break. I think if we get that the promotion playoff spot will still be within our reach. We were clearly the better team tonight, we made lots of chances. The only thing that let us down is that we weren’t clinical enough.”

Henderson was full of praise for his young team and is hoping to strengthen his squad in July in the hope of pushing for a playoff spot.

“We’ve got some really exciting young players here. Stephen Christopher played very well tonight, he looked very dynamic. Denzil Fernandes was brilliant for Stephen’s goal with a fantastic run into the box and a great set up. Anthony McAlavey is really starting to hit form for us. Andy Wall did well up front for us. Darren Murphy really dictated where the play went tonight so there are lots of positives. We really have a good attacking threat going forward.”

“I’ve already spoken to five or six lads. I’m not going to get all of them and I won’t say anything until I have them signed. We will just wait and see who we can get come July.”

“Cian Leonard is injured at the moment and scoring goals is our issue. We’ve dominated the last three teams we have played but just not finished them off so it is an area we have to look at.”
