Limerick FC moved into the quarter final of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Ford Cup thanks after Dave O’Connor headed the only goal of the game against Finn Harps.

It was O’Connor’s first goal for the club and he is hoping that Limerick can push forward in the competition after two clean sheets in their two games to date.

Harps were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Caolan McAleer kicked out at O’Connor.

It was the former Shamrock Rovers man who got the last laugh though with the winner on 64 minutes.

“I haven’t got my name on the scoresheet in a couple of years now and obviously to get the winner in a cup game is a little bit special so I’m delighted,” O’Connor said.

“The sending off allowed myself and Dean (Clarke) on the other side a chance to express ourselves a little more and get into the space that they were leaving.

“I took a bit of a chance at the back post and Garbhan (Coughlan) put in a brilliant ball and I was lucky enough to get my head on it.”

O’Connor came to Limerick as a centre half, but has been employed as a left back by Neil McDonald since he took charge of the club. It is a challenge that the former Shamrock Rovers man is relishing.

“I have no preference as to where I’m playing. As long as I’m getting in the team and getting a run of games, I’m happy.

“I like the additional part of being able to get forward in the full back position. Obviously, I need to improve different aspects, but yeah, I’m enjoying the extended period in the team at left back and long may it continue."

Speaking of the possibility of meeting his old side in the draw for the next round, O’Connor joked that he wouldn’t mind seeing them in the final as they haven’t’ had the best of luck in the competition in recent years.

He added: “We’re in a quarter final now and have kept two clean sheets in the last two rounds. Potentially the draw could open up nicely, but if we get a home draw here and a big crowd anything is possible.”
