Ahead of the new SSE Airtricity League 2017 season, we caught up with Cork City striker Sean Maguire to see what he thinks ahead of the new campaign.

Q: Firstly Sean, there was quite of a bit of speculation around your future after your fantastic 2016 season, what motivated you to stay at Cork?

SEAN: Well, Cork feels like a home to me. I’m at a club where I’m scoring goals and the team is set up perfect for me to continue to do that this season and beyond. The club have really taken me in and the City is great as well. I feel like I’ve moved around quite a lot in my short career, six clubs and I’m only 22-years old, so I just wanted to stay and keep enjoying my football. It was a simple decision in the end as next season will be even better. We’re going for the double and I really think we can achieve that.

Q: Top-scorer in the SSE Airtricity League last season, you must be looking forward to getting started again?

SEAN: Absolutely buzzing! It’s been great to get going again and we’ve had a few new additions as well to strengthen the squad so things are really looking great for us at the moment. I think having seen the new additions in training, they all give us something extra. There’ll be a bit of pressure on myself this year but I quite like that as dealing and performing with that will make me a better player.

Q: You’re in European competition next year again but would it be fair to say that the league title in the main aim of the 2017 season?

SEAN: The main objective this year is to go out there and win the league. It’s been a long time since Cork last won the league and I want to be part of a group which gives the City that chance to lift the trophy. It won’t be easy as there are plenty of clubs strengthening for next season, the likes of Shamrock Rovers and Bray Wanderers, and everyone will be up for beating us. But I want us to start well at Finn Harps and keep it going.
