Cabinteely have moved up to 7th place in the SSE Airtricity League First Division after a 3-1 away victory over Athlone Town.

The visitors squandered a number of golden opportunities in the opening period of the game. Their first came in the 4th minute when Paul Fox somehow managed to turn his volley from five yards out over the bar.

The Dublin side missed another chance five minutes later, this time it was Karl Byrne’s turn to blaze over a volley from close range. Athlone were struggling to retain possession during this period, inviting further pressure from the visitors.

Marty Waters would hit the post with a looping header in the 14th minute, but Cabinteely would finally take the lead in the on the 22 minute mark. Athlone failed to deal with a cross into the area, only managing to clear the ball as far as Waters at the edge of the area.

Waters’ first time half-volley was directed low into the far corner, leaving Fogarty in the Athlone goal with no chance. With this goal Waters became Cabinteely’s all-time top goalscorer. However, Cabo were made to pay for their wastefulness in the 39th minute.

Steven Grogan’s corner was met by Ciaran Grogan, who’s towering header flew into the top corner to level the score heading into the break. The beginning of the second half provided very little action, with both sides struggling to create anything in the final third.

Cabinteely would go on to regain the lead in the 68th minute. Only a couple of minutes after being introduced as a substitute, striker Joe Doyle got in behind the Athlone and slipped the ball under the goalkeeper form a tight angle to give his side the lead.

They would wrap up the three points in the 87th minute after Waters’ shot rebounded off the post to Athlone's Baba Issaka, who’s attempted clearance was blasted into his own net. Next up for Athlone is a trip to Drogheda, while Cabinteely will host Cobh Ramblers.
