Athlone Town ended their first home game of the the 2018 Airtricity League with a 2-1 defeat to UCD.

UCD had the better of the lay early on in the game, with Athlone goalkeeper Nathan Murphy making a number of saves, including a superb doubtle-stop in the 22nd minute, to keep the visitors at bay.

The home side grew into the game as the half went on, but never really troubled the visitor’s goal. UCD got off to a flying start in the second half when Georgie Kelly produced a neat finish after a dangerous ball in from the left wing.

UCD keeper Conor Kearns was never really troubled, and the visitors doubled their lead in the 75th minute when Kelly swivelled in the box and steered the ball under the Athlone goalkeeper for his second of the game.

Athlone Town managed to grab a goal late on after substitute Ollie Hazmat raced down the wing, before squaring the ball to Get Smith who finished neatly in the 89th minute. There was still time for UCD to add to their lead, as Yoyo Mahdy wrapped up the three points for the visitors.
