Athlone Town continue to play the role of Jekyll and Hyde in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

After a turbulent week off the pitch, they managed to pick three points off the league leaders, Cobh Ramblers.

Athlone had more of the ball and the better of the few chances that were created in the first half.

The story of the game though belongs to Athlone's Chris Rodrigues. In the opening minutes of the second half, Rodrigues ran half the pitch and was fouled by Cobh captain Chris McCarthy, who picked up a yellow card.

Rodrigues picked himself up and smashed the penalty into the roof of the net, not once but twice, as the referee said some players had encroached into the area for Rodrigues' first attempt.

The second goal came from another dead ball situation. McCarthy fouled as Athlone looked to be through on goal, and the captain was shown a straight red card. Rodrigues took the free and it was as good a free kick you'll ever see. He lifted the ball over the wall and into the side of the goal, leaving Cobh's goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

Cobh finally came into the game after they were two down, but it was too little too late. Mathew Welan with a late consolation goal for the away side.
