Neither side had anything to gain but pride tonight but both sides put hard graft in for an entertaining game in Athlone Town Stadium.

The Tribesmen just managed to salvage a point at the death to finish their season unbeaten in six of their last seven games in all competitions.

Galway United took the lead after a mistake by Aaron Myles. The goalkeeper attempted a clearance but struck the nearby Conor Melody, who reacted quickly to round Myles and tap the ball into the net.

Athlone equalised from nothing in the 55th minute. Kealan Dillon fancied a long range effort from outside the box, he initially drew the save from Cian Mulryan but the ball squeaked over him and rolled into the net.

The home side took the lead in the 89th minute after a mazy dribble from Dillon, who easily slotted the ball past Mulryan, leaving defenders in his wake. The lead only lasted a mere two minutes though.

Just a minute into injury time Stephen Walsh thumped a ball deep from his half finding the boot of his centre back partner Killian Brouder who smashed the ball into the net.
