Athlone Town produced one of their best results in recent club history as they secured an incredible 5-3 win over Wexford in the Extra.ie FAI Cup second round.

The First Division side advance to the quarter-finals of the competition thanks to an amazing comeback win secured in extra-time at the Athlone Town Stadium.

Wexford looked to be cruising towards the quarter-finals at the break as Jack Doherty slotted home his penalty in the 16th minute and Conor English added a second just three minutes later.

Athlone responded after the break as Ronan Manning found the net in the 52nd minute before Lee Duffy equalised just two minutes later to level the tie at 2-2.

Wexford responded and James Carroll scored his first goal of the club in the 67th minute to restore the away side's lead. However, ten minutes from the end of normal time, Scott Delaney equalised for Athlone as the game went into extra-time.

It took Athlone just three minutes after the restart to take the lead for the first time in the match as Lee Duffy slotted home to make it 4-3. Duffy's match ended prematurely however as he was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 97th minute to give Wexford hope.

Remarkably, Athlone extended their lead in the 103rd minute as Adam Lennon scored the final goal of the game to secure a famous win for the Midlands club.
