The visitors started the brighter looking more composed in possession but the games first real chance of note came from a Kevin Devaney header, narrowly missing the front post from Keith Ward’s cross.
Cork, who were looking to avenge the recent 4-2 hammering, responded well with the lively Kieran Sadlier going close with a header of his own as the Cup holders continued to look a threat from set pieces, cleverly packing the Shane Supple’s six-yard area from a spate of corners in quick succession.
The home side had a glorious chance on the half hour mark when Dinny Corcoran turned the ball first time around the corner to Ward, who drilled low at the feet of Mark McNulty. Bohs finished the half the stronger and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead.
Kevin Devaney showed his power and pace to break from the half way line and unleash a thunderbolt from 30 yards that smashed off the post that will probably need repainting.
The Gypsies flew out of the traps in the second half and missed two guilt edged chances. Firstly, Keith Buckley found Daniel Kelly with a lovely ball over the top but the speedy winger could only volley tamely at McNulty. Almost immediately after this Kelly bent a clever outside of the foot pass but left winger Devaney again shot straight at the Cork stopper.
But the breakthrough did come eventually. On the break, Keith Ward found Darragh Leahy on the left wing who quickly slipped in Devaney in a 2 v 1 situation. Devaney showed brilliant composure to drill the ball across the face of the goal for Dinny Corcoran to tap home.
Disaster struck for the home side as Cork won a penalty with four minutes remaining. Left back Leahy clashed with substitute Conor McCarthy as he tried to clear and up stepped Kieran Sadlier to smash the ball home to the right of Supple.
