SSE Airtricity U19 League Champions Bohemians bowed out of the UEFA Youth League after a 2-1 defeat by FC Midtjylland.
Goals from Casper Tengstedt and a Mitchell Byrne own goal secured the victory, cancelling out Ali Reghba's first-half penalty.
The home side, looking to claw back the one goal deficit, came out flying in front of a packed Dalymount Park. A hugely entertaining clash of style developed as The young Gupsies looked to enforce their power and pace on a technically gifted FC Midtjylland.
It took until midway through the first half for the home side to really grow into the game and begin to assert their dominance, especially down the flanks.
Both Promise Omochere and Ryan Graydon looked a threat, with the latter going close with a low drive to the far-post at the half hour mark. Bohemians followed this with probably the chance of the half, Steven Nolan delivered a beautifully-floated free-kick from the right-hand side, and up rose Seamus Curley to nod his header downwards but goalkeeper Rafn Elias Olafsson got down sharply.
Right on the stroke of half-time, Bohs got the all important lead and equalizer across the two legs that their play deserved. Again, excellent work down the flank, saw right-back Andy Lyons nip in front of a static Midtjylland defence, only to be clipped as he stepped inside Pajberg Tobias Anker. The referee correctly gave the penalty and up-stepped Ali Reghba to hammer home the spot-kick to give his side the lead on away goals.
The visitors looked dangerous on the break through Casper Tengstedt and Tang Gustav Isaken, two of the potential stars of the future, showing outstanding guile and creativity when in possession.
With the tables turned on the Danish side, their intent was clear from the start of the second-half as their midfield three pushed right up behind their striker. The equaliser came just eight minutes into the second half, when their main man, Tengstedt, floated through a couple of challenges as he entered the box, only to be brought down by the onrushing Sean Bohan.
Up stepped the talented No.10 to fire home into the side netting, cupping his ears to the raucous Bohemians fans and in doing so inviting the title of pantomime villain for the remainder of the game.
Things went from bad to worse for the home side when Tengstedt showed his class yet again, ghosting by two defenders on the byline. His low cut back to the edge of the six-yard box was unfortunately bundled into his own net by Mitchell Byrne to make it 4-2 on aggregate.
It was an unfortunate ending for Craig Sexton’s young side who, never stopped competing throughout but showed they can absolutely compete at this level only to be punished by a couple of fantastic moments individual brilliance.
