Bray Wanderers kept up their side of the bargain in their pursuit of a play-off spot as Dean Williams haunted his former club Athlone Town.

Shamrock Rovers player Williams switched from Athlone to the Seagulls earlier this month and opened his account for the Co. Wicklow club in spectacular style with a hat-trick to club to earn them three points.

Despite not exactly bombarding the Athlone goal in the first period, it did seem inevitable that Bray’s superiority would tell after the interval and so it proved two minutes shy of the hour mark.

Cantwell played the ball into Luke Nolan’s feet and his low cross bobbled up and appeared to possibly strike the arm of Williams but he got his shot away nonetheless and it squirmed beneath Myles.

Having lost the lead twice against Galway the week prior, Gary Cronin will have been relieved to see his side double the lead in the 63rd minute as the hosts punished woeful defending from Athlone.

Luke Nolan tossed a throw-in into the box and Williams was left completely free to half-volley it past Myles but he could have taken a few touches; so non-existent was the Athlone man-marking.

Having failed to score in his first three outings for the Co. Wicklow club, Williams almost grabbed three in the one! He scampered onto a through-ball and looked to slot it past Myles but the shot-stopper turned it past the post.

But he wasn't to be denied in the 86th minute as he darted across his man to drill Jake Ellis' low cross into the top corner.
