Chris Lyons claimed a hat-trick as Cabinteely’s record-breaking unbeaten run came to an end.

Having failed to win in their previous four visits to Stradbrook since 2016, United avenged their 4-1 defeat against the First Division leaders from last March. And ended Cabo’s seven-match undefeated streak in the process.

The results means that just three points separate the top-four teams with Shels and Longford sandwiched in between Cabinteely and Drogheda. The Louth visitors started well and took a tenth minute lead.

Sean Brennan’s free into the box was headed on by Luke McNally. Lyons’ nipped in ahead of a defender to score low from close range. The striker was pivotal in the away side’s second score on 26 minutes.

He went down in the penalty area under pressure from two opponents. But referee Marc Lynch waved play on. Lyons reacted to get up and square for Stephen Meaney to convert from eight yards.

Any interval pep talks by the Dubliner’s seemed to go out the window as the Boynesiders made it 3-0 just 50 seconds after the interval. Conor Kane’s run down the left wing saw his centre pick out Lyons.

He side-stepped a challenge before fire low to the far corner of the net. They registered a fourth on 53 minutes. Brennan’s free from the left went all the way to the back post were the unmarked McNally converted.

With ten minutes to go, Chris Brown was bundled over in the box. Lyons made no mistake to complete his treble.
