History was made at Stradbrook as Cabinteely’s record-breaking season continued as they secured a First Division play-off berth.

Three goals in ten magical minutes first half spell saw South Dublin side see off Athlone 3-1 and ensure a best-ever fourth place finish in the league.

Club record scorer Kieran Marty Waters ended his barren spell since last May – albeit out for major part with injury – broke the deadlock after 21 minutes.

Keith Dalton swung in a corner from the left right footed. Conor Keeley got a header which hit an Athlone player. Waters pounced from close range to give the hosts the lead.

Two goals in less than 90 seconds put the White and Greens three up on the half hour. On 29 minutes, Kevin Knight whipped a cross-field ball from the left flank. Waters gathered brilliantly to control.

He then clipped a stunning curling placed shot from 16-yards past Aaron Myles. Play had barely restarted when Divisional top scorer Rob Manley got in on the act.

Having been on the back foot for the entire first period, the Midlanders pulled one back just two minutes after the turnaround.

Former Cabo player Nika Kalandarishvili beat Stephen McGuinness at his near left post with a low effort. A brilliant save by Myles save denied Waters his hat-trick on 68 minutes before Manley’s deflected shot cane back off the post on 77.
