Finn Harps kept their promotion hopes alive with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park on Saturday evening.

The opening half was a tame affair with both teams struggling to unlock either defence. Harps were restricted to shooting from distance with both Timlin and Devers trying their luck in the early stages but with no success.

Despite being second in the possession stakes it was the home side who created the best chance of the half. Shane O’ Connor, making his competitive debut, slid a neat ball through to the onrushing Fleming. The Cobh winger set himself before shooting low from 16 yards only to find Gallagher equal to it by saving with his feet.

As the half wore on, Harps continued to press but only had a long distance shot from Borg, which went well wide, to show for their efforts.

Cobh emerged in the second half looking to ignite the game but almost fell behind in the 49th minute when a Devers shot from the edge of the box narrowly went wide of a beaten Hunt.

To their credit, the away side continued to look for the breakthrough and got their reward in the 66th minute when Devers latched on to a through ball and was taken down by Hunt. No complaints from the Cobh shot-stopper as the referee pointed to the spot.

Place stepped up and smashed the ball home to give Harps the lead on the night. Ramblers never looked like getting back into this game and despite a late red card for Harps captain Cowan the visitors held on comfortably to move into joint second place in the table.
